description

‘Heavy Metal’ Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum ‘Heavy Metal’) is a striking ornamental grass selected for its strong vertical habit and distinctive metallic blue foliage. Its bold, upright structure makes it the perfect backdrop in the back of a garden bed!
Blooming from July through September, airy light-pink flower panicles rise high above its steel-blue blades, creating a beautiful contrast of soft color against cool-toned foliage. ‘Heavy Metal’ performs best in full sun with average to moist, well-drained soil, but it tolerates drought once established and can handle occasional wet conditions.
From fall into winter, the foliage transitions to an attractive golden-brown while the seedheads mature to a soft tan. The persistent seeds provide food for birds, and the sturdy stems maintain strong vertical structure and seasonal interest well beyond the growing season!
