before you grow!

Not sure where to start? We're here to help! Learn how to understand your garden's sunlight, soil conditions, and space, plus a few simple tips to get your garden ready for planting. Everything you need to know before you grow!

sun exposure

step 1: pick your spot!

Choose where you want to grow your new native plants.

step 2: follow the sun!

On a clear day during the growing season, check your garden spot every 1–2 hours, from morning until evening. Make a note of when the area is in direct sunlight versus shade.

step 3: add it up!

Count the total hours of direct sunlight your garden receives throughout the day. Full Sun: 6+, Part Sun: 4-6, Part Shade: 3-4, Shade 3 hours.

step 1: wait for rain!

Wait for a normal rainfall, then give your garden about 24–48 hours to drain. Avoid testing immediately after a heavy storm!

step 2: get your hands dirty!

Dig about 4–6 inches into the soil in your future garden bed. Grab a handful of soil and give it a gentle squeeze.

step 3: check the moisture!

Does the soil feel dry and crumbly, slightly damp, or soaking wet?

dry soil

Feels dry and loose, and tends to dry out quickly after rainfall.

moist soil

Feels slightly damp and retains moisture without staying soggy.

wet soil

Stays soggy for extended periods or collects standing water.

the perfect spot

step 1: take a walk!

Look for an area where you'd love to add some color and life! Think about spots along your house, walkways, fences, or even an open area of lawn.

step 2: look around!

Check for nearby trees, buildings, downspouts, and other obstacles. These surroundings can affect how much sunlight, water, and growing room your plants receive

step 3: measure your space!

Grab a tape measure and check how much room you have for your garden.

Your garden can take different shapes, so choose a layout that works for your space!
