description

Tufted Hairgrass (Deschampsia cespitosa) is an airy, cloud-like grass that looks wonderful when the flowers of neighboring plants peek through its soft blooms! Its delicate panicles sway in the breeze, adding movement and fine texture to the garden.

Blooming from June through August, slender stems rise above clumping, fine-textured green foliage and carry airy panicles of green to purple-tinged, cream-colored flowers. Tufted Hairgrass prefers part sun to part shade with average to moist soil, can handle full sun with consistent moisture, and tolerates occasional wet conditions.

Beyond its cloud-like display, Deschampsia cespitosa provides ecological value, its seeds offer food for birds, and its dense mounds create shelter for small wildlife and beneficial insects! From fall through winter, the seed heads mature to a soft tan, providing lasting seasonal interest and structure in the garden.
