description

Blue False Indigo (Baptisia australis) makes a striking tall backdrop and adapts to a wide range of garden conditions. Its spiky, blue-purple blooms bring bold form and color to the late spring and mis summer landscape, creating a strong architectural presence!

Blooming from May through July, pea-like flowers rise on erect, densely branched stems above blue-green foliage, forming a full, bushy mound. Blue False Indigo performs best in full sun to part sun with well-drained, average to moist soil. While it takes patience to establish, often 2–3 years as it develops its deep taproot but once it's mature, it becomes long-lived and even tolerates periods of drought.

In fall, distinctive seed pods form, adding seasonal interest! They can be used in dried floral arrangements or left standing for winter structure in the garden.

Beyond its beauty, Baptisia australis serves as the host plant for the Hoary Edge (Cecropterus lyciades) butterfly and the Black-Spotted Prominent (Dasylophia anguina) moth, while also attracting a wide range of pollinators, making it an excellent addition to any pollinator-friendly garden!
