description

Nodding Onion (Allium cernuum) is an adaptable and impressive plant! It is a graceful native perennial bulb known for its soft pink, bell-shaped flowers that gently arch and “nod” toward the ground in late spring to early summer.

This adaptable plant thrives in full sun, where flowering is most abundant, but it also tolerates light shade and dappled woodland conditions. It grows easily in average garden soils ranging from moist to dry and becomes drought-tolerant once established, making it a reliable choice for both naturalized gardens and tougher urban sites!

As a member of the onion family, its foliage releases a characteristic scent when crushed, which helps deter deer (though no plant is completely deer-proof!). Despite being the most widely distributed species in the Allium genus, Nodding Onion is considered uncommon or threatened in some regions.

Beyond its ornamental appeal, Allium cernuum is an important nectar source for butterflies, native bees, and other pollinators.

Elegant, resilient, and ecologically beneficial, Nodding Onion is a subtle but impactful addition to sunny borders, meadow plantings, and native gardens!
