description

Zigzag Goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis) is a wonderful addition to shady woodland gardens, bringing yellow blooms and upright structure to lower-light spaces. Goldenrod is often mistakenly blamed for hay fever, but that irritation is actually caused by ragweed. Goldenrod’s pollen does not trigger seasonal allergies!

Blooming from August through October, clusters of bright yellow flowers line its distinctive upright, zigzagging stems, accented by toothed, ovate leaves. Zigzag Goldenrod is easy to grow in part sun to part shade, tolerates deeper shade well, and prefers dry to average soil.

Along with adding late-season color, Solidago flexicaulis plays an important ecological role. It serves as a host plant for the Wavy-Lined Emerald (Synchlora aerata) and Green Leuconycta (Leuconycta diphteroides) moths, along with several other species. Its blooms provide valuable late-season nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while its seeds feed birds such as Swamp Sparrows, Pine Siskins, nuthatches, and various game birds, making it a meaningful addition to a wildlife-friendly woodland garden!
