description

Bluestem Goldenrod (Solidago caesia) is an attractive, easy-to-grow woodland perennial that brightens shady gardens with cheerful bright yellow flowers. Goldenrod is often mistakenly blamed for hay fever, but that’s actually caused by ragweed. Goldenrod’s pollen does not trigger seasonal allergies!
Blooming from late August through October, delicate golden-yellow flower clusters line its gracefully arching blue-green stems, accented by alternating oblong leaves. Bluestem Goldenrod grows best in part sun to part shade, tolerates deeper shade well, and prefers dry to average, well-drained soil.
In addition to adding late-season color to woodland settings, Solidago caesia plays a vital ecological role as a keystone species! It serves as a host plant for numerous butterflies and moths, supports specialist bees and other beneficial insects, and provides essential nectar for late-season pollinators. As the season fades, its seeds become an important food source for songbirds, making it both beautiful and highly valuable to the ecosystem!
