description

Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is a native grass favorite! Known for its upright habit and beautiful color changes throughout the seasons, makes it perfect for a sunny garden. Its fine-textured, blue-green foliage adds a soft yet structured vertical element that blends effortlessly into naturalistic and designed plantings.

Blooming from August through October, branched flower stalks rise above the leaves and delicate, silvery seedheads emerge along its slender stems, adding a light, airy feel. As the season progresses, the foliage shifts from blue-green to warm shades of copper, orange, and burgundy. Little Bluestem grows best in full sun with dry to average, well-drained soil and is highly drought tolerant once established.

Beyond its striking appearance, Schizachyrium scoparium provides valuable ecological benefits by serving as a host plant for several skipper species and a food source for other insects! Its dense clumps offer shelter and nesting material for wildlife, while its seeds provide food for birds through fall and winter. The upright stems and rich fall color persist into winter, adding lasting structure and seasonal interest to the garden!
