description
Plantainleaf Sedge (Carex plantaginea) is an adorable and distinctive woodland sedge, prized for its wide, puckered blades that add bold texture to shaded gardens. Its clumping habit and striking foliage make it an excellent choice for creating interesting, textural groundcover along the forest floor.
Blooming from April through May, showy maroon flowering spikes rise above its glossy, dimpled leaves, adding subtle spring interest. Plantainleaf Sedge grows best in part shade to full shade with average to moist soil and can tolerate occasional dry periods once established.
More than just a low-maintenance groundcover, Carex plantaginea serves as a host plant for numerous caterpillars and skippers, and its seeds provide an important early-season food source for birds. Nearly evergreen, it offers extended seasonal interest and rich texture throughout much of the year.
