description

Pennsylvania Sedge (Carex pensylvanica) is a lovely, fine-textured native sedge that brightens woodland gardens with its soft, flowing foliage. With a gently clumping and spreading habit, this low-growing plant forms a lush, carpet-like groundcover across the garden floor!

Blooming from April through May, subtle, feathery white flower spikes rise slightly above its light green, narrow blades, which can reach up to about 12" long. While the flowers are understated, the graceful texture of the foliage is its true highlight. Pennsylvania Sedge thrives in part shade to full shade with average to moist, well-drained soil.

More than just a low-maintenance groundcover, Carex pensylvanica serves as a host plant for numerous caterpillars and skippers, and its seeds provide an important early-season food source for birds! Semi-evergreen in habit, it offers extended seasonal interest and does an excellent job of filling gaps in shaded garden spaces.
